The new layout has changed will better aerodynamic capabilities. Redesigned 2016 BMW X1 will have great similarities with the BMW X2 Active Tourer. Both models will be built on the same platform, so the logical next major similarities.

The second generation of BMW’s SUV is almost finished. 2016 BMW X1 is coming in great refreshment, with many new features and innovations. New model will be underpinned with new platform, which promises significant improvements. New generation of X1 will be built on the UKL platform. Thanks to a Haldex style multi-plate clutch setup, new model will have all wheel drive. In its most basic version it will have front wheel drive too. 2016 BMW X1 will be made of aluminum, carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. With the usage of these materials, new model will improve fuel economy as well as general performances. This new model will be slightly smaller externally, but it will offer more space inside the cabin. Redesign of 2016 BMW X1 will also include some changes on the front end. Changes will include redesign of the front grille, headlights and some other parts, in order to improve general look and aerodynamics of the vehicle.

2016 BMW X1 Redesign

New car will be lighter due to use of the aluminum and carbon fiber for its building. The 2016 BMW X1changes won’t be made just in engine lineup. Styling will be similar to its bigger sibling X5, with some familiar lines. It will also share some concepts with new X4. For the new BMW X1 is prepared new front fascia, which will make aerodynamic better. Nose and kidney grille will be refreshed, while a lot of attention were turned to headlights.

Here’s our first look at the upcoming 2016 BMW X1 in full production clothing. Whereas previous prototypes were dressed with unfinished front and rear end parts, this one previews the car that will go on sale late next year.

The exterior styling is more streamlined than the current model blending elements found in the bigger X3 and the 2-Series Active Tourer with which it shares its front-wheel drive-based underpinnings. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive system will be offered on higher-end models.

Current models V6 engine range will be dropped. Second-generation of the 2016 BMW X1 crossover will be built with all-wheel drive system, which will be the change to the current model’s RWD. That is probably main change. BMW’s xDrive is still an option, but this is yet to be decided, would it be found under the hood of the 2016 X1. New front and back of the SUV will better aerodynamic. However, this concept is similar to X2 Series Active Tourer. German carmaker is developing it under secret name F48. Anyway, since these two models are using same platform, expect a lot of similarities between them.

The X1 only reached U.S. shores in 2012 but overseas it’s been on sale since 2009. The vehicle received a host of updates for the 2015 model year, but these will be the last such updates before the arrival of the new model. A reveal may take place soon, possibly at the New York Auto Show in April or at the Shanghai Auto Show that same month.

The new F48 X1 will make use of BMW’s first front-wheel drive platform which can be configured to offer an all-wheel drive option as well. To gain space and also to feature more attractive and well proportioned design lines, the BMW X1 will take advantage of the FWD setup which offers more interior space and versatility. While the first X1 was mostly popular thanks to its attractive price point and fun driving dynamics, the second-gen X1 will stand out on the road with its sporty and muscular stance, along with a series of standard features seen in other BMW series models.

While the current X1 is based on the rear-wheel-drive platform of the BMW 1-Series Hatchback sold overseas, and is available with either rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations, this new X1 rides on the front-wheel-drive UKL platform common to the 2-Series Active Tourer. BMW’s xDrive all-wheel drive will still be available, though, and is expected to be the predominant option here in the U.S.

2016 BMW X1 Engine

In the engine department, BMW will likely fit its new B48-series 2.0-liter turbo four for vehicles delivered to the U.S. The most powerful version of this engine at present produces 231 horsepower. Overseas, buyers are likely to have the choice of some diesels as well as BMW’s B38-series 1.5-liter three-cylinder engines. Transmissions should include six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic units.

As far as the engines go, the new BMW X1 2016 is going to feature a few different engines. The most likely candidates are the 1.5- and 2-liter turbocharged engines which are developed in cooperation with Toyota. The smaller 3 cylinder 1.5-liter engine will provide around 170 to 190 horsepower while the 2-liter version is said to be good for more than 250 horsepower which would bring it closer to the older model. There is also going to be a modular 2-liter diesel engine which will provide as much as 200 horsepower. Even though the X1 is going to be front-wheel-drive there is also going to be an all-wheel-drive version which is a bit reassuring for those who loved how the previous generation drove.

The X1 will join the ranks of BMW’s other 2-Series models and the latest MINI hatchbacks in using the Bavarian group’s 1.5-liter 3-cylinder and 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel lumps paired to both six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions, depending on the market.

We’ve also heard about a plans to add a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid version featuring a similar setup to BMW’s 2012 Active Tourer Concept pairing 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine to an electric motor and lithium-ion battery pack with around 190-horses. However, don’t expect to see this model at launch.
