The 2015 BMW 4 Series ranks 5 out of 22 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of published reviews and test drives of the BMW 4-Series, as well as reliability and safety data.

The BMW 4-Series isn’t merely a family of two-door versions of the 3-Series. While it occupies the same space in the market as the BMW 3-Series Coupe used to, it starts with the 3-Series’ underpinnings, engines, and equipment, yes; but it’s lower, wider, and longer than its sedan counterparts.

It’s fair to admit some puzzlement over a BMW 4 Series with four doors. After all, BMW rebranded its two-door 3 Series as the 4 Series just last year. So why call this a 4 rather than a 3? The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe also shares the same length, wheelbase and width as the two-door, contributing to the confusion.

Then again, BMW has a knack for creating niches that don’t exist. In the case of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, it’s a coupe in name only, as it does indeed have four doors. It’s fair to say that this new four-door is better-looking than the 3 Series sedan, as it sports the 4 Series’ lower, slightly wider and more aggressive-looking stance. And instead of a trunk, the Gran Coupe offers a hatchback-style liftgate that enhances cargo loading ease and versatility.

The shape of the 2015 BMW 4-Series is at once puzzling, and a little more low-set, aggressive, and alluring than the 3-Series Coupes that preceded it or the current 3-Series sedans on which it’s based. It has the same proportions of the long-ago 8-Series, as well as some of the styling cues of former generations of 3-Series coupes. The cabin’s more adventurous, with some sweeping arcs and trim packages that lift its basic-black wardrobe into something a little more couture.

2015 BMW 4 Series Interior

The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is a five-passenger, four-door hatchback styled as a coupe. It is offered in two primary trims: 428i and 435i.

All 4-Series models come standard with leatherette upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, a AM/FM/CD stereo with HD radio and a USB input, Bluetooth connectivity with audio streaming, automatic climate control, a moonroof, cruise control, adaptive and auto-leveling xenon headlights, foglights, a 6.5-inch infotainment screen and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Standard equipment on the 428i Gran Coupe includes 17-inch wheels, a sunroof, adaptive xenon headlights, foglights, rain-sensing wipers, a power liftgate, auto-dimming side and rearview mirrors, a sunroof, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, eight-way power front seats, driver memory settings, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 6.5-inch display screen, BMW’s iDrive electronics interface, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, BMW Assist and a nine-speaker sound system with a CD player, a USB/iPod interface, an auxiliary audio jack and HD radio.

Every luxury coupe has to answer the same question: Is the 4-Series handsome enough and daring enough to be steered away from the sedan on which it’s based (in this case, the esteemed 3-Series sport sedan)? A lot of shoppers will agree on the handsome part, but opinions are going to be mixed on whether it’s that much more daring, or different, to be its own model.

The shape of the 2015 BMW 4-Series has the same proportions of the long-ago 8-Series, as well as some of the styling cues of former generations of 3-Series coupes. The so-called Hofmeister kink long ago lost its kinky appeal, once every other automaker started to copy it, and the side sculpting’s steered away from the heaviest Frank Gehry touches, into a safe, simple stamping that could be on a Mustang or an F-Type or a Regal.

2015 BMW 4 Series Exterior

The 2015 BMW 4 Series’ classy interior design and upscale materials earn praise from the automotive press. Critics say the coupe and convertible’s rear seats are comfortable enough for short trips around town, while the four-door 4-Series Gran Coupe offers enough head- and legroom to fit an adult comfortably. According to automotive journalists, cargo space is impressive in every 4-Series trim, but especially so in the Gran Coupe, which has a deep trunk with a wide, hatchback-style opening. Standard features in the 2015 BMW 4-Series include Bluetooth, a USB input, a sunroof and BMW’s iDrive infotainment system. Available features include leather upholstery, heated front seats, satellite radio, navigation, a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, parallel parking assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and a hands-free trunk opener. Reviewers report that BMW’s iDrive infotainment system has sharp graphics and intuitive on-screen menus, though some still note that simple adjustments require more button clicks than they do in rival systems.

LED headlights and automatic high beam control are available in the Lighting package, while a Cold Weather package adds heated front and rear seats, and a heated steering wheel. The Driver Assistance package adds a rearview camera and front and rear parking sensors, and can be enhanced with the Driver Assistance Plus package, which adds blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, frontal collision warning and mitigation, and a side- and top-view camera system.

2015 BMW 4 Series Engine

The 2015 BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers two engine options, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission (a manual transmission is not available). Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive (denoted as “xDrive”) is optional. Initially the 435i will offer only rear-wheel drive, although an all-wheel-drive option is expected to debut later in the model year.

The 428i uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder to generate 240 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque. That puts it within reach of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds with either the manual or automatic transmission, with grippy summer tires. You also get a 155-mph, electronically limited top speed.

Step up to one of the 435i models and you get the familiar 3.0-liter turbocharged in-line six-cylinder engine, rated at 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft. It’s just as quick as the last-gen M3, with the 435i sprinting to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds with the manual transmission, or five seconds flat with the auto box.

Backing up the sporty appearance is a choice of two powerful yet efficient turbocharged and directed-injected motors. The 428i uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque – potent enough to propel the coupe from zero-to-60 mph in the mid-five-second range – while the 435i packs a 3.0-liter inline-six with 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. When properly equipped, BMW says the 435i can hit 60 mph in five seconds flat.
