Now, the 2015 Audi Q5 has been one of our favorite luxury crossovers since its arrival, and it’s now offered with a variety of drivetrains to suit the driver’s personal taste. Each of its five engine choices is paired with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. No matter how you choose the Q5, though, it always delivers responsive acceleration and good handling, despite its higher center of gravity compared to a car or sport wagon.

The Q5 continues to share a basic platform with the A4 sedan and A5 coupe/convertible. Like those models, it features relatively sporty handling along with a comfortable ride, though the platform’s driving dynamics are dulled somewhat by the Q5’s higher height and larger size. On the other hand, the Q5 does provide an elevated view of the road ahead along with plenty of cargo space: 29.1 cubic feet with the rear seats up and 57.3 with them folded.

Despite being a car-based crossover, Audi says the Q5 still acquits itself well off-road. Its climbing capability of 31 degrees of incline is respectable, while its overhang angle is 25 degrees thanks to a short front overhang. The ramp breakover angle, determined by the wheelbase, is 17.5 degrees. Ground clearance is a healthy 7.87 inches, with a fording depth of up to 19.69 inches when driving through water. Despite all that, the Q5 should not be mistaken as a hard-core off-road vehicle.

Passengers sit relatively high in the Q5, with more than enough headroom and legroom in front, and the seats themselves are firm and adjustable to a wide range of sizes. Even in back, there’s a enough legroom for most adults, thanks to a rather long wheelbase. Cabin materials are about the best they come in this class, with a rich, unified feel throughout and nice detailing. The Q5 has excellent build quality and a tight, refined feel overall although road noise can be an issue.

2015 Audi Q5 Interior

The 2015 Audi Q5 takes a subtle approach to SUV styling–choosing handsome, simple design over anything too flashy. The Q5’s cockpit derives its style from its lack of drama, its lack of subpar materials, the absence of flashy cheapness. It’s a universally pleasing, well-detailed execution that’s common to just about every Audi interior. Like those other cars from the brand, the Q5 has a rather wide center console, clearly differentiating the driver and front passenger areas, cockpit style, yet the dash itself isn’t all that curvy or claustrophobic rather, it’s more upright and forward, helping maximize a sense of space. A beautiful layered oak trim is now an option, elevating bits of the dash with a furniture-like finish.

Take a look at one at a dealer and you’ll no doubt find that it looks great and has an interior that oozes luxury. You’ll probably find a Q5 that suits your powertrain desires, too. Audi offers it with everything from a turbocharged four-cylinder engine to a turbocharged diesel V6, throwing in a supercharged V6 and a four-cylinder hybrid system for good measure. Although the Q5 is one of the older members of its class, with roots stretching back to 2009, consistent updates over the years have maintained its leading status.

Audi’s engineers have also been trying to make their creations more fun to drive, and the Q5 is exemplary here as well. It really does feel at home dashing between corners on a country road. The downside is that on bumpy roads the Q5 will jostle you around more than competing rivals. If you value this crossover’s above-average handling, you probably won’t mind; otherwise, you might.

The 2015 Audi Q5 is a luxury compact SUV that adds a newly standard power tailgate this year. The 2015 Audi Q5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 220 horsepower. A trio of 3.0-liter V6 engines are available. The 3.0T’s supercharged engine has 272 horsepower, the TDI’s turbodiesel generates 240 horsepower and the high-performance Audi SQ5 model has a supercharged engine with 354 horsepower. The 2015 Audi Q5 Hybrid is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and an electric motor that together make 245 horsepower. All 2015 Audi Q5 models come standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. The base 2015 Q5 earns an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg city/highway. TDI models return 24/31 mpg and the Q5 Hybrid gets 24/30 mpg.

2015 Audi Q5 Exterior

Less of a shrunken Q7 than a more spacious Audi wagon, the Audi Q5 has pretty proportions and a cabin that’s cleanly styled and trimmed to a high standard. The cohesive look fits snugly alongside Audi’s car lineup, blending in easily with the Allroad wagon and even the A4 sedan, which all share its tall grille and slim LED-outlined headlamps. Its cockpit sets a high-water mark for simplicity and for fit and finish, particularly with the optional layered-oak trim, though we might wish for more recognizable buttons while we fumble to control the lush-looking non-touchscreen display.

Standard equipment on the 2.0T Premium includes the turbocharged four-cylinder engine, 18-inch wheels (19s are optional), automatic xenon headlights, LED running lights and taillights, automatic wipers, heated exterior mirrors, aluminum roof rails with crossbars, a power liftgate, eight-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar for the driver and optional heating), a tilt-and-telescoping four-spoke steering wheel, leather upholstery, tri-zone climate control, a sliding and reclining 40/20/40-split folding rear seat, Bluetooth connectivity, Audi’s Multi Media Interface (MMI) with dash-mounted controls and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, an iPod/USB input, an auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio.

The Q5 is more than the mechanical cousin of Audi’s Allroad wagon, it’s visual kin too, sharing the softly rounded cues common to all Audis, just slightly taller and blunter than the related wagon. Last year’s minor restyling reshaped the grille and slimmed down the headlamps, and capped it with LED taillamps, but did nothing to upend the Q5’s best features its carlike curves and its closeness to the rest of the Audi A4/A5 lineup.

2015 Audi Q5 Engine

The 2015 Audi Q5 may very well have multiple personalities, but we’re not complaining. There’s a choice of five different engines each with different dynamics, ranging from sensible to enthusiastic and its well-sorted suspension handles each configuration with grace and ease.

Where the green-eyed Q5 shoppers will peel off is with either the Q5 TDI or the Q5 Hybrid. The TDI is the less complex, more rational piece of the fuel-economy puzzle. With the usual diesel differences–a much narrower powerband, more vibration through the driving inputs–the TDI snares excellent combined fuel economy ratings of 27 mpg while still keeping a pace with the turbo-four edition, thanks to 240 hp and 428 pound-feet of torque. There’s some additional tire noise too, but the compromises are slight for those leading EPA figures.

The 2015 Audi Q5 is a luxury compact SUV that adds a newly standard power tailgate this year. The 2015 Audi Q5 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 220 horsepower. TDI models return 24/31 mpg and the Q5 Hybrid gets 24/30 mpg.

The 2.0T Premium and Premium Plus come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 mpg combined (20 city/28 highway). In Edmunds testing, a Q5 2.0T accelerated to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, an average time for the segment.

The Q5 3.0T trims get a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, along with an automatic stop-start system that saves fuel by shutting off the engine when you come to a halt. In Edmunds testing, the 3.0T engine brought the Q5 from zero to 60 in a fleet 5.8 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 21 mpg combined (18/26).

The base Audi Q5 has an energetic, torquey power delivery that makes the most of its 220 horsepower. The Q5 isn’t a lightweight; it weighs about 4,100 pounds in base trim. Still, even the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder is pleasantly assertive. The turbocharger doesn’t lag much, power comes on smoothly, and 0-60 mph times of 7.0 seconds put this basic version well within luxury-car standards, as does a top speed of 130 mph.
